Synovial giant cells in rheumatoid arthritis: Expression of cystatin C, but not of cathepsin B

This study was designed to investigate the expression of the matrix degrading proteinase cathepsin B and its endogenous inhibitor cystatin C in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with special regard to multinucleated synovial giant cells (SGC). We applied an immunohistochemical double-labeling technique. SGC strongly expressed cystatin C and CD68, but were negative for cathepsin B. This staining pattern occurred in osteoclasts as well. Our findings support the idea that in RA matrix destruction by cathepsin B is not mediated by SGC or osteoclasts, but by mononuclear synoviocytes.

Abstract Background Non-target-site based resistance to herbicides is a major threat to the chemical control of agronomically noxious weeds. This adaptive trait is endowed by differences in the expression of a number of genes in plants that are resistant or sensitive to herbicides. International audience; Genomic sequences of ten strains of plant-associated Pseudomonas spp. were surveyed for the presence of TonB-dependent outer-membrane proteins (TBDPs), which function in the uptake of substrates from the environment by many Gram-negative bacteria. The ten strains represent P. fluorescens, P. chlororaphis, and P. synxantha isolated from the phyllosphere, rhizosphere or soil. 14 to 45 TBDPs were identified in each strain, and phylogenetic analysis of the TBDPs identified five that are conserved across all ten genomes. Background Life satisfaction among young offenders may be affected by the subjective experience of their social status and by the feeling of being a ‘loser’ compared with others, but it is not clear what variables affect such experiences in this group. Aims To examine relationships of type of sentence (prison or probation) and of gender with subjective social status, sense of defeat and life satisfaction among young offenders. Male Police Officers’ Law Enforcement Preferences In Cases of Intimate Partner Violence Versus Non-Intimate Interpersonal Violence

This article explores male police officers’ law enforcement preferences across different scenarios of interpersonal violence, involving intimate (partner violence against women) and non-intimate relationships (between- and within-gender). The influence of police officers’ sexist attitudes and empathy on their law enforcement preferences was also analyzed within and across these scenarios.
